Homework Essay

How is camera and Mise en scene used to make the 1970's appear more masculine than the 2000's?

The mise en scene and camera are used to make the 1970's appear more masculine than the 2000's because in the scene the whole work place is male dominated in the 1970's where as the work place in the 2000's has male and female workers. The atmosphere in the workplace in the 1970's is very dark, smoky air and very unatural e.g. there were very few windows and yellow lamps and ceiling lights were used whereas in the 2000's the workplace has lots of natural light, fresh air and clean e.g. there were lots of windows and the ceiling lights in the workplace were very bright and white instead of yellow. Further more the work place in the 1970's is very messy, unorganised, out of control and very loud e.g. there were lots of papers every where, and desks and chairs were untidily placed in the room and everything was very crammed in and was space consuming, also the male workers were not serious about their work and kept on joking around and talking very loudly who seemed to have no station or discipline which makes it seem more masculine compared to the 2000's where the workplace is very organised, clean, quiet environment and colleagues are serious and very focused e.g. the inspector has his desk very organised and clear as well as he and his colleagues take things seriously and are very focused to do their absolute best. In addition majority of the male workers are smoking cigarettes in the work place which a typical masculine act in the 1970's as well as the main boss is very aggressive and uses physical violence to sort out problems within the work place which is very masculine as the boss seems very powerful and out of control whereas in the 2000's the main boss is respectful to his colleagues and is clam and very professional if there are any issues and problems within the work place and out of it. The style of clothing in the 1970's is old fashioned, informal and dirty/stained which suggest that it is more masculine as men are referred to as untidy, messy and unconcerned with what other people think of them whereas in the 2000's the people at the work place are less masculine as everyone is dressed up as smart and formal, also the colleagues and inspectors are handsome and pretty. The body language in the 1970's was much more masculine than in 2000's as the male dominated work place was informal, when there were issues the colleagues were told to take it in like a man and even taken the mickey out of, also the boss was fat and big which gave his big presence when he was around as well as his power whereas in the 2000's emotions were excepted and allowed in the work place and expressing and respecting and helping other colleagues was not seen as a weakness. In the mise en scene the camera uses a lot of closes ups and medium shot and wide for the 1970's era to show it is more masculine at that time e.g. the male dominated workplace as the camera purposely takes a wide shot to show this but in the 2000's era the camera is taking a lot of close ups and wide shots as there are both female and male workers in the work place.
