film industry : homework by lolade arowolo

The film industry is the entertainment industries involved in producing and distributing movies. The Uk's film industry is part of a evolving creative media landscape. there are 4 different components that are referred to when being involved in the film industry, that is production, distribution, marketing and exhibition.

Production:

the production process refers to the stages required to complete a media product, from the idea to the actual master piece.
film producers prepare and then supervise the making of the film before presenting the product to a film distributor. they might  be employed by a film studio  or independent either way they have to be creative as well as the accounting personnel.  for example:

The making of Iron man 3:

Marvel is a fun and passionate group to work with,” states Christopher Townsend who went from being the visual effects supervisor responsible for Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) to Iron Man 3(2013).  “Their type of films allow for visual effects to be played in a varied playground.  It’s great.” The native of Britain jokes, “I keep on coming back for more punishment!”When a bunch of passengers are sucked out of a hole in Air Force One at 30,000 feet, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) leaps into action. In order to capture that action sequence Shane Black recruited the Red Bull skydiving team. The director made a bold decision by opting to go with live-action actors instead of digital versions. It took the film crew six days to shoot the skydiving scene.

Distribution:

usually after a film has been completed , the studio makes an licensing  agreement with a distribution company. the  distribution company shows the movie to prospective buyers who represent the theatres   . the buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of lease agreement.the prints of the movie are then sent to the theatres a few days before the opening day. then finally the movie is played at the cinema for a number of weeks and so you as a  viewer are able to go and watch the film as you please.

Marketing:

film promotion is a practice of promotion within the film industry. many film studios invest in expensive marketing campaigns  to maximise the revenue early in the release cycle. in 2012 over £300 million was spent on prints and advertising by film distributors. think like a man , the hunger games then the  avengers were the most tweeted movies in 2012. there are  different types of ways to advertise movies. for example through trailers  , internet marketing e.g Facebook and twitter, and also film posters.

Exhibition:

there are a number of ways in which the audiences can get to see a film. however the most common way is at the cinema. the most common way in which people can become most engaged in a upcoming film is through the trailer. this is because it is a short clip of the movie which has selected parts of the film used to persuade the audience to come and see what happens at  the end of the movie.
the film value chain is a stripped down depiction of the process of investment and recoupment for a film project, from beginning to end.  The further to the left you are in the chain, the earlier on you are in production, the greater the potential investment risk for a capital investor.

Homework Sheet 1

The three main stages of production are:
  1. Pre-Production: Planning, scripting & storyboarding, etc.
  2. Production: The actual shooting/recording.
  3. Post-Production: Everything between production and creating the final master copy.
For example the making of Titanic the movie took a long process. Based on a fictional love story set on the Titanic, the Titanic movie of 1997 is by far the most popular Hollywood depiction of the event. Directed by James Cameron, the film won a total of 11 Oscars as well as 76 wins and 48 nominations. The love story between Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) is the main focus, but there are many other characters who are based on actual Titanic Passengers. After its release in 1997 it became the highest grossing film of all time pulling in over $1.8 billion worldwide.

Distribution
Here's the path a film usually takes to get to your local cinema:
  • Someone has an idea for a movie.
  • They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
  • A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
  • People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew).
  • The film is completed and sent to the studio.
  • The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
  • The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make.
  • The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theaters.
  • The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The prints are sent to the theaters a few days before the opening day.
  • The theater shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
  • You buy a ticket and watch the movie.
  • At the end of the engagement, the theater sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.

Marketing

Different types of marketing could be trailers, billboards, bus ads, happy meals, adverts and this list goes on forever. A trailer is a preview of the film and an example of this is from titanic:

Exhibition

Audiences get to see films in the cinema, theatre and even online. Normally before a movie is officially released there are movie premieres , this is also an exhibition of the product and through this feedback is received on how good the movie was.

Due to better technology, movies are frequently streamed online, this has caused the dvd market to make  great losses and the movie industry because the movies are getting watched for free.

Homework Sheet 1 - Production, Distribution, Marketing & Exhibition

Production

Filmmaking often referred to as film production has specific separate stages which are essential in order to have a finished product before being screened to an audience or being released.

There are more or less 4 stages in film production which are:
1. Development - This is the first stage in which Ideas for the film is being created and screen play and scripts being written whether it is a story, book, play or the original idea. Also financing for the project is required and needs to be given the go ahead to proceed in order to stay in budget and run things smoothly and to plan.
2. Pre-Production - preparations are being made for the shoot at this stage as well as hiring a film crew team, selecting locations and constructing sets. Also at this stage every step of actually creating the film is carefully designed and planned. e.g. storyboards, scripts, production budget, insurance and pre-visualizing.
3. Production - In production the actual recording and shooting takes place with more specific department crews being recruited which is just common roles in film making.
4. Post-Production - At this more or less final stage the images, sounds, visual affects and recording are edited. This completes the film or final product which is waiting to then be released and screened for the audience.

For example World War Z, it was written by Matthew Michael but was based on Max Brooks 2006 novel. This is where the script and planning came in so it is Development stage. The movie had 25 filming
locations which were primarily taken in United Kingdom and United States which is the Pre-Production process. A British rock band called Muse had one of their tracks called "follow me" used as a theme song in World War Z which was part of the Post-Production process.

Distribution

After a film has been completed and is the finished product, the studio concludes a licensing agreement with a distribution company. The distribution makes a specific number of copies of the media product to make and views the movie to prospective buyers who represent movie theaters. The buyers negotiate the terms of the lease agreement and then if successful, view the movie for a specified number of weeks for the audience to come and experience and enjoy. There are many other types and ways of distribution e.g releasing the media product on a digital formats such as the internet which is a different medium compared to physical distribution such as releasing the media product on DVD's and cinemas.
There are many reasons to why distributors release film specifically on one week opposed to another. Some of the reasons are that there maybe be too much competition on a certain week meaning the distributor losing in on revenue due to lack of audience watching the released film compared to other popular films being released in the same week meaning extending release date to a more less active time.Furthermore if the distributor releases a film in a week where there is hardly any competition then its revenue will be largely making money and profit therefore wider range of audience and viewings as well as rapid rise in popularity. Also a distributor might release a film depending on the season or special month or even on the calendar e.g. Christmas, Easter Friday and spring and so on if relevant beneficial.

Marketing

Marketing is a way for film promoters to inform the public of their media products release and also increase the awareness of the public about their product to watch and listen to their product. one of the most common way films are sold to audiences is by age rated media products, if one media products is suitable to have a wide range of audience then it will be making a lot of money compared to media product with a more narrow age rating which may lose more money but somehow make more money if possible. The marketing department is responsible for designing and implementing an effective, cohesive advertising campaign across several different media platforms, including theatrical movie trailers, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, the Internet and billboards. There are many different types of marketing which most of them fall under advertising which plays an essential role in marketing a media product. Advertising can be done thorough internet, TV advert, bus ads, posters, certain food products and much more. Here are examples of how some companies went onto advertising their media product:

Exhibition

Exhibition is how we the audience get to see the film product. There are many ways in which a media product can be seen or heard by the audience through different medium such as radio, online sites, cinema, premieres, trailers and much more. The most common way for the audience to see films is to go to cinemas and experience it. Normally before a movie is released there are movie premieres and trailers to give the audience a taste of parts from the film to inform them what they're in for and to sell them into watching the movie and state how good it was.

Due to technology advancing at a fast rate we can stream and download films online more or less as soon as they get released which is has caused a huge loss in revenue for the film industry's as people will rather watch a movie for free online or download it in HD, also the DVD market has made a huge loss due to people preferring to not pay up and opting to watch for free online. However one way in which most film industry's have over come this problem is by making the film 3D which means the public will not posses the 3D technology at home meaning they will have to go to the cinema to watch it.

The Film Value Chain

Usually feature films open first theatrically ie: in cinemas. A cinema release has long been, and still remains, the most effective way to bestow stature on a film and create demand to see it. But the cinema is just one link in the value chain. After the big screen run, films are released in flexible timescales in a growing range of other formats so consumers may chose how, when and where to watch. These are ancillary markets.
  • Theatrical Launch - A film is released in cinemas. A good opening weekend is crucial for the success of a film.
  • Non-theatrical license - Aeroplanes, hotels and coaches.
  • Home entertainment - Films are packaged for release on digital media such as DVD and Blu-Ray, and made available for download.
  • Pay/subscription TV - Pay Per View, Video on Demand, Sky and Virgin Media.
  • Free to air TV - Films maybe scheduled repeatedly on TV channels year after year.
  • Licensed merchandising - Rights sold to manufacturers of merchandise to use brand on their products.

Homework - Production, Distribution, Marketing, Exhibition

Production
The production process are the stages that are needed to complete a media product. This is from the very 1st idea to the final  masterpiece.

The first stage of production is
1.) Pre- production - This stage is where planning, scripting, story boarding, etc take place.
2.) Production - The actual designing, shooting or recording of the media product.
3.)Post-production - Everything between production and creating the final product. For example the editing after the movie.

Other stages that may be included in production are financing , screen playing etc.

In skyfall for example, it was written by Neal Purvis . This is where the scripting will come in so this is the pre- production stage.
The filming of the movie began in november 2011 and primarily took place in united kingdom, china and turkey. This is the production stage.
Adele recorded a theme song for skyfall , and this was been played before the final product was released so can be classified as a post-production and also Karen Baker Landers won an award for best sound editing this is also a post-production stage.

Distribution
There are two main types of distribution methods. Digital distribution and physical distribution methods.
Digital distribution describes the delivery of a media content without the use of a physical media, it is usually done through online mediums such as the internet.
Physical distribution is when the product is delivered through means of DVD's , cinemas etc.

A reason why a distributor will prefer to release on one weekend as oppose to another may be because to prevent competition. Maybe the distributor will know that if it releases its movie the same time with another movie that is trending, it will loose on revenue because other people would want to watch that instead of the distributors movie.
Another reason maybe the movie coming out maybe a seasonal thing. For example movies related to christmas will come out when its december times.

Marketing
Marketing is the way the makers of a media product let the public know their product is out there or increase the chance of the public watching or listening to their product.
Advertising plays a big role in marketing a product. Advertising can be done in various ways such as bill boards, posters , online. Here are pictures showing how some companies went about advertising their product.

Movie trailers is another way of advertising a media product. Below is the trailer of Top Boy a channel 4 series.

Exhibition
Exhibition is how we the audience get to see the film. Different ways in which a movie or audio  can be seen or heard, is through the radio, online, examples of websites that let you watch movies online is netflix, lovefilm etc and going cinemas to watch the movie.
Normally before a movie is officially released there are movie premieres , this is also an exhibition of the product and through this feedback is received on how good the movie was.

Due to better technology, movies are frequently streamed online, this has caused the dvd market to make  great losses and the movie industry because the movies are getting watched for free.

However some companies are overcoming this through the 3D technology. Most people don't have the 3D technology at home ad so they have to go cinema and pay for it to experience it.
